"The function of the artist is quite clear: he must open a workshop, and take the world in for repairs there, in fragments, just as it comes to him."
— Francis Ponge
Born in France in 1985 and expatriated to Montreal, Mateo Humano now thrives as an artist who loves to weave dialogues between the ages.
Renowned for his baroque street art, which draws inspiration from ornaments around the world, and for his striking paintings on oriental rugs, Mateo fuses urban art with the heritage of ancient cultures, creating a coherent bridge between the street and the intimacy of enclosed spaces, the exterior and the interior, the urban and the intimate.
After two decades of painting walls across the globe, Mateo has perfected the art of ornamentation, applying this expertise to diverse mediums: from city walls to ceramics, wood, paper, and even fabric. Painting on a rug has become for him a surprising yet harmonious way to link his practices.
Curious and erudite, Mateo questions cultural identity and promotes ancestral wisdom. His female portraits, created on Persian rugs, express a profound reflection on the links between tradition and modernity. Ornamentation, transformed into makeup or tattoos, gives his characters a unique strength and personality.
Exhibited internationally, Mateo's works are displayed alongside those of Banksy, Obey, Mr. Brainwash, as well as masters such as Picasso, Dalí, Basquiat, K. Haring, and Warhol. His murals adorn walls in France, Canada, Argentina, the United States, Spain, Mexico, Colombia...
Familiar with large-scale exhibitions, his art is regularly showcased at the FIAC and Miami Art Basel, testifying to the recognition of his unique talent in the global artistic landscape. Mateo Humano, through his art, invites a journey where the past and the present meet, where the beauty of traditions blends into the dynamism of contemporary art, thus offering a window into the human soul throughout the ages.
Mateo collaborates for the first time with LE CARTEL in 2024 as part of the collective textile exhibition “Paris est une fête”.
