x THE CARTEL
Chien champion, also known as Felipe Arriagada-Nunez by family and friends, is a Montreal-based visual artist. Having been bitten too many times in his childhood by poorly trained, sharp-toothed dogs, he decided to tame his trauma by adopting a canine moniker. A way like any other to ward off bad luck.
Since he was two years old, Felipe has skillfully wielded a pencil. Just like he sleeps and eats, he also draws every day. He traces on paper the portraits of the people he loves, especially LA BRUTE, who shares his life. He draws the city he lives in, and the cities he visits, from Chile to Japan. He immortalizes moments of joy and parties; grief, which is part of life; significant current events; good meals and the films that have left a mark on him; and always a bit of sport.
The boy who used to draw clandestinely on walls as a teenager is now paid to do so, whether at the Montreal airport or for a mural marking a cinema's anniversary. Once, he even drew bagels on shoeboxes for Nike.
With his warm colors and imperfect lines, Felipe does more than just draw. Through his illustrations teeming with life, he tells us stories that celebrate human warmth, with a touch of nostalgia. For what he wants above all else through his works is to do the heart good and give a furious desire to live to anyone who looks at them, through the eyes of a child or otherwise.
And it has now been several years since Chien champion has been bitten.
Chien Champion is collaborating for the first time with LE CARTEL in 2024 as part of the PARIS IS A MOVEABLE FEAST collective textile collection.
